PBA seeks veterans’ trophies for centennial showcase

The Penang Badminton Association (PBA) is appealing to former shuttlers to lend their trophies and medals for its centennial celebrations in November.
PBA president Datuk Kah Kau Kiak said the items would be showcased at the association’s 100th Anniversary Gala Dinner on Nov 22 in Penang as part of efforts to honour Malaysia’s badminton legacy.
“These trophies and medals are more than personal honours. They are symbols of perseverance, the pride of Malaysia, and proof of how far our sport has come,” he said at a gathering with ex-national players in Kuala Lumpur today.
During the lunch, those badminton greats attended the event were former Uber Cup representatives Lim Siew Choon and Khor Lay See; 1979 and 1982 Thomas Cup singles Saw Swee Leong, and Koay Kar Lin and Chuah Han Khim.
The two notable names who made their presence were 1967 Thomas Cup champions Datuk Tan Aik Huang and Datuk Yew Cheng Hoe, and Malaysia Purple League chief executive officer Datuk Jack Koh.
Kah said displaying the memorabilia would allow the younger generation to appreciate the sacrifices and achievements of past champions.
“The younger generation needs to know that Penang badminton once had athletes who fought bravely for Malaysia on the international stage. Our current success is built upon decades of commitment,” he added.
He assured that PBA would handle the items with “the greatest care and responsibility”.
“We will safeguard them as treasures—not just for the players, but for the entire badminton family,” he said.
Kah also paid tribute to the veterans, saying their contributions remain among the brightest chapters in Malaysian badminton history.
“Your achievements have long been written into the history of our sport and have inspired generations of badminton lovers,” he said.
The centennial celebrations will feature international guests, including badminton leaders, with PBA promising a programme that highlights both the association’s heritage and its vision for the future.

曾经代表槟州在羽球场上奋战，拿下无数荣誉的宿将，在槟州羽总号召下，在吉隆坡齐聚一堂，畅谈近况，重温当年的拼搏点滴，场面温馨而感动。
槟州羽总会长拿督许庆吉昨天特地往吉隆坡，宴请曾经代表槟州及马来西亚的宿将，诚意邀请他们出席槟州羽总百年庆典，以及促请他们借出羽球生涯的战利品供展览，分享个人荣耀之余，也让后辈们向这批槟州与国家英雄致敬。
出席的宿将包括1967年汤杯冠军功臣拿督陈奕芳与拿督尤清河、1979年及1982年汤杯队第一单打苏瑞龙、前尤柏杯代表林秀春与许丽丝，以及为槟州羽坛做出不少贡献的郭家麟与蔡汉钦。
许庆吉在餐会上说，能够在吉隆坡与大家齐聚一堂,其内心充满感激与感动。
“各位不仅是槟城羽球的骄傲,更是马来西亚羽坛的中流砥柱。你们曾经在世界的赛场上挥洒汗水,凭着顽强的意志与超群的球技,为国家赢得无数荣誉。这些辉煌的战绩,早已写进了马来西亚体育的历史,也深深镌刻在一代又一代羽球爱好者的心中。”
“今年,槟城羽球总会迎来100周年庆典。一百年,这不仅是一个数字,而是一段漫长而厚重的历史。从最初的一片羽毛球场, 到今天在世界羽坛享有盛名的槟城羽球,背后凝聚了无数前辈的心血与付出。你们的拼搏和成就,就是我们这段历史中最耀眼的篇章。”
“我常常思考,一个百年庆典应该如何庆祝?我认为,最重要的不是华丽的舞台或盛大的宴会,而是让历史被看见,让荣耀被传承。年轻一代需要知道,槟城羽球曾经有一群英雄,他们在世界赛场上奋勇拼搏;槟城羽球的辉煌,并非偶然,而是由一代代球员辛勤付出、不断传承所积累起来的。”
“因此,今天我在这里,怀着最诚挚的心,向各位提出一个请求: 希望各位能慷慨地将你们曾经赢得的奖杯、奖牌,暂时借给槟城羽球总会,在11月22日的百年庆典晚宴上展出。让所有与会着,不论是年轻球员、球迷,还是来自世界各地的羽球嘉宾,都能够亲眼见证这些历史的荣光。”
“这些奖杯与奖牌,不仅代表着你们个人的荣誉,更是槟城、马来西亚羽坛的共同骄傲。它们是奋斗的象征,是历史的见证,更是激励未来的火种。透过展出,我们希望年轻人能够从中得到启发,明白什么是坚持、什么是拼搏、什么是为国争光。”
