OUR badminton legends, Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Chan Peng Soon, both hailing from Penang, have agreed to showcase their Olympic medals at the Penang Badminton Association’s Centennial Celebration on November 22.
They will also be present in person to share their proud achievements with the people of Penang and guests from around the world.
Penang Badminton Association president Datuk Kah Kau Kiak shared that he met Lee and Chan at the recently concluded Malaysia Super 500 Badminton Tournament.
During their meeting, he expressed his hope that they would display their Olympic medals, trophies, rackets, and other memorabilia at the centennial celebration. The two legends readily agreed, much to the excitement of the association.
Lee who also serves as the ambassador for the centennial celebration, is a three-time Olympic silver medalist in men’s singles (2008, 2012, and 2016).
Chan together with Goh Liu Ying, clinched the silver medal in mixed doubles at the 2016 Olympics – still the highest Olympic achievement by Malaysian players in men’s singles and mixed doubles to date.
Adding to the celebration, Malaysia’s top women’s singles player, Goh Jin Wei, will also contribute by displaying her two World Junior Championship medals along with other personal memorabilia.
Kah expressed gratitude for their generous contributions, stating that these three distinguished athletes have exemplified the spirit of remembering their roots and have set an inspiring example for the younger generation.
Kah also noted that the Penang Badminton Association will continue to collect memorabilia from other prominent players for display during the celebration, further enriching the event and marking a historic milestone in Penang’s badminton legacy.

奧運英雄齊聚檳羽總百年慶典 李宗偉陳炳順吳堇溦共襄盛舉
我国羽球传奇，来自槟城的拿督威拉李宗伟和陈炳顺，已经答应把他们在奥运会夺得的奖牌，在11月22日举行的槟州羽总成立百年庆典上展示，并亲自来到现场与槟城乡亲及来自全球各地的嘉宾分享他们的傲人成就。
槟州羽总会长拿督许庆吉说，他在刚结束的大马羽球超级500赛会晤李宗伟和陈炳顺，表达希望他们可以把奥运会奖牌及其他比赛奖杯、球拍等物件，在槟州羽总成立百年庆典上展示，两人爽快答应，让槟羽总感到振奋。
也是槟州羽总百年庆典大使的李宗伟，分别在2008、2012、2016年奥运会获得男单亚军，陈炳顺则在2016年与吴柳莹拿下混双银牌，至今仍是大马球员在男单及混双项目的最高成就。
此外，我国首号女单吴堇溦，也将展示其两届世界青年冠军奖牌及其他个人物件。
许庆吉感谢他们的慷慨分享，表示出身槟州羽总的上述3人，展现了饮水思源精神，也立下了典范，值得后辈们学习。
许庆吉也说，槟州羽总将陆续收集名宿的物件在百年庆典展示，让百年庆典增添意义，为槟州羽球历史写下浓重一笔。
